Lo fi: a hip hop beat in four tracks of five
This follows your Jazz rap note ("it should have rap drums"). The same fault was counted in the other mixed styles. Lo fi chose its drums from only two kits, and one of them was a brushed jazz kit, so half of all Lo fi tracks played a brushed snare and an open jazz kick. You described Lo fi as "very warm, tight with a hip hop beat".
What changed
| Before | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Kits | Lo fi tape and Dusty jazz (the brushed one) | Five: Lo fi tape, Dusty jazz, Dusty break, and two new soft kits, Soft groove and Soft dusty |
| In 100 tracks | The brushed kit in 52, Lo fi tape in 48 | The brushed kit in 17. Lo fi tape 23, Dusty break 22, Soft groove 19, Soft dusty 19 |
| From one track to the next | The same kit stayed 27 times in 80 | The kit changes at every new track |
| Kept as it was | The speed, the swing, the beats, the bass, the keys, the pads and the top line. In 100 tracks read before and after, nothing but the kit differs. The brushed kit itself is not changed, it is only rarer | |
The same track on each of the five kits
The first 30 seconds of one Lo fi track at 78. Every note is the same in all five. Only the kit differs: listen to the snare and the kick.
The kit Lo fi always had, unchanged. The other kits were measured against this one
The same dusty kick, a fat snare sat back and darkened, a quiet clap, foot hat
The same dusty kick and soft fat snare, with quiet finger snaps
The boom bap kit added this morning: the same dusty kick, a tight snare, finger snap
Dusty jazz: brushed snare, open jazz kick. Left in as a colour, since you heard one on Waiting Room and did not mind the drums
By measure the two soft kits sit level with Lo fi tape (within 0.2) and are no brighter (within 0.5). The fat snare as it comes was 9 brighter than Lo fi tape, so it was turned down and darkened for these two kits only. The kick is the one Lo fi tape has. The brushed kit sits 6.6 quieter than Lo fi tape.
If you would sooner have no brushed kit in Lo fi at all, say so: it is one word to take out.
How far the fix has reached
| Style | What the count found, in 100 tracks | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| Jazz rap | A brushed snare in 100 | Mended, live this morning |
| Hip hop and boom bap | A brushed snare kit in 27 | Mended, live at 12:58 pm |
| Lo fi | A brushed snare kit in 52 | Now 17, live at 1:36 pm |
| Trip hop | A brushed snare kit in 17 | Counted and left as it is: a brushed kit belongs in trip hop |
No saved song changes. Every other style plays note for note as before.
